How To Create Minimalistic Landscapes Using Blur Filters in Photoshop

For at least 10 - 15 years I love creating abstract minimalistic landscapes such as beach and forest scenes in my post processing of photos using a range of Photoshop's blur filters.  Here's one of my latest images that features this (and other) techniques: The original photo was taken almost 15 years ago with a 7 megapixel Canon Camera, but I wanted to challenge myself and try to make more interesting image out of it.  Start I came across this image while browsing through my photo archive and kind of liked the scene with the woman enjoying standing in or close to the surf. Editing Steps 1. I expanded the image from its 4:3 ratio to a square format making the added part transparent. Then I selected the blue sky and erased it. As I knew I wanted to create an abstract image I searched for a cloudy sky and found a suitable photo in my library, that would make a more interesting sky than a bland blue one.   I positioned this sky a layer under the beach photo and go...

Book covers before and after comparison

Hello,

as some of you might know, I am a contributor to various picture libraries.
When I started with photography it has always been a dream to see my creations used for book or music CD covers. Apart from some images I sold directly to customers most images were licensed through picture libraries.

There is my German library Westend61 that normally focusses on lifestyle imagery, but also distributes travel images as well as some of my more surreal works.

And two other libraries ARCANGEL IMAGES and TREVILLION IMAGES that distribute my more surreal and fantastic works. Both focus on the book cover and album cover market.

Despite the fact, that it is always nice to see one's work published, it is also quite interesting to see how these sold images were used and whether they were altered.

I chose some of my recent publishes covers and created a comparison between the original image and the actual cover. Hope you like this.

So these are all covers that are quit close to my original image. There have been some colour changes, crops and placing of figures, but overall not much has changed. I have also a couple of images that were heavily altered or used in a collage or composing that made it sometimes difficult to make out my own image. These I save for a later post.

Usually when selecting images for a cover one would pay attention to sufficient copy space for author and book title. But that isn't always necessary so I also contribute images that are missing this. The last and the first image were selected for a cover even though they don't have a more or less large free space for typography.

Thanks for your attention.

Dirk
