How To Create Minimalistic Landscapes Using Blur Filters in Photoshop

For at least 10 - 15 years I love creating abstract minimalistic landscapes such as beach and forest scenes in my post processing of photos using a range of Photoshop's blur filters.  Here's one of my latest images that features this (and other) techniques: The original photo was taken almost 15 years ago with a 7 megapixel Canon Camera, but I wanted to challenge myself and try to make more interesting image out of it.  Start I came across this image while browsing through my photo archive and kind of liked the scene with the woman enjoying standing in or close to the surf. Editing Steps 1. I expanded the image from its 4:3 ratio to a square format making the added part transparent. Then I selected the blue sky and erased it. As I knew I wanted to create an abstract image I searched for a cloudy sky and found a suitable photo in my library, that would make a more interesting sky than a bland blue one.   I positioned this sky a layer under the beach photo and go...

First of all: Though I am a German guy I am writing this in English. Many people know me from Flickr, most of them don't speak German, so I thought it might be better to write my posts in English.
That doesn't mean, that I won't be posting something in German as well!  ;-))

I am totally new to the blog-thing, but I thought I wanted give it a try. So, what do I want to do with it?
I want to present my texture work. I also like to show how I use them in my work, giving you an idea how I use them. Hopefully I can inspire you to try something with textures regarding your owm photos as well!

I am also planning to make a collection of tips & tricks regarding my and other peoples work with textures, so it's worth while checking this blog from time to time.

I also want to present my own texture creations. You can purchase them over at my website:

Making of: " Silent Sorrow"

Let me start with a short tutorial on how I processed this picture:

I shot this on a rather dull and rainy sunday evening on my way home.
Nothing spectacular, but I thought adding some textures might help me express the mood I was in when I took this picture.

I chose the following three textures:

For all of you who are working with Photoshop I added a screen shot of the blending modes in Photoshop:

The edges of the picture became too dark, so I made a copy of the background layer and placed it on top of the layers. After playing with the blending modes for some time I came up with 100%/25% - divide.
This made it a little bit brighter and crisp, so I finally was satisfied wih the result.

Hopefully this gave you an idea how I achieved this look.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks you!
